State-of-the-Art Technology Elevates Ska Brewing Sustainability

Ska Brewing Leads the Way with State-of-the-Art Technology for Earth Day 2024

DURANGO, Colo.— In a bold move aligning with the 2024 Earth Day theme “Planet vs Plastics,” Ska Brewing is excited to announce significant advancements in their Sustainability initiatives. These steps underscore their commitment to environmental responsibility and the use of state-of-the-art technology in their brewery practices.

Investments in Sustainability Initiatives

As a pioneer in the craft brewing industry, Ska Brewing has a history of minimizing environmental impact. Utilization of recycled materials and the adoption of infinitely recyclable aluminum cans are just a few examples of their longstanding dedication. This year, the brewery doubled their investment in Colorado-grown grain, which now makes up 85% of Ska’s total malt usage.

Groundbreaking State-of-the-Art Technology for Packaging

In a groundbreaking move, Ska Brewing has installed the CanCollar Corsair machine. This state-of-the-art technology, provided by WestRock, is a North American first for Craft breweries. It allows Ska to transition from plastic can collars to paperboard solutions. This change reduces plastic usage by up to 95% for their multipack products, eliminating approximately four tons of plastic waste annually. This substantial reduction in plastic waste significantly lowers the brewery’s carbon footprint and waste production.

Innovative Zero-Waste Goals with Skampost Partnership

Building on their zero-waste goal, Ska Brewing has partnered with Durango’s Table To Farm Compost. All spent grain from the brewing process, which was previously used as cattle feed or sent to landfills, will now be composted. This change helps in reducing methane emissions—a potent greenhouse gas—while supporting local agriculture. This partnership promotes circular economy practices by transforming brewing byproducts into valuable compost for community use.

Community and Environmental Impact of State-of-the-Art Technology

“Ska Brewing has never been content with the status quo,” says Ska Brewing President Dave Thibodeau. “Our initiatives set new benchmarks for sustainability in brewing. These new systems bring us closer to becoming a zero-waste facility and further reduce our environmental footprint. This Earth Day, we showcase how the beer industry can lead in the fight against plastics and support our planet.”

Ska invites their community and fellow brewers to join this vital movement towards more sustainable practices. Look out for new QR codes on all of Ska’s cans to learn more about their sustainability efforts and Earth Day initiatives, including opportunities to win upcycled merchandise from companies like Mindy’s Beer Gear and Thread Metal Stone.
